<description>I have always found myself torn between design and music. I am starting to find myself producing work which lies directly between the two.

Historically, water has been a forbidden sound in music. It has been utilised to aid sound-making, such as with some organs - but it there is a scarcity of sounds made from actual water. I also feel that increasingly, music is moved from the realm of live sounds, to computer generated sounds - dry, rigid and inactive.

Naturally, I looked to John Cage as my starting point, particularly his 'water walk'. Cage makes an interesting point; "even a conventional piece played by a conventional symphony orchestra: the horn player, for example, from time to time empties the spit out of his horn. And this frequently engages my attention more than the melodies." (I also think it could be rather wonderful to have real water sounds alongside a symphony orchestra!)

I experimented with various water sounds, and I settled with the noise made by bubbles. After various prototypes I developed the perfect vacuum and different tones of bubbles. Behold!

<description>Musical habituation; to explore the hidden spaces in which music is rehearsed and made.

Within the past century, sound and sound-making has saturated the arts. We have learnt how to record sound, to preserve it in the annals of time, and we have the ability to relisten to sound for a limitless number of times. To be a maker of sound has increased in popularity for this reason. However, images, dispite their silent nature, are not mute. An image can speak; it can evoke emotion comparable to the reaction created by an expressive series of chords. Similarly, the signifigance of white space within a publication or background blur in a photograph can be paralled to the importance of the presence silence within music, or even, during a conversation.
Music is composed in a similar way to which a photograph or painting is composed. Kadinksy wrote that ‘Music expresses itself by sounds, painting by colors, etc. facts that are generally recognized.’... ‘Music, for example, organizes its means (sounds) within time, and painting its means (colors) upon a plane. Time and plane must be exactly ``measured’’ and sound and color must be exactly ``limited.’’ These ``limits’’ are the preconditions of ``balance’’ and hence of composition.’

For thease reasons I believe is appropriate and necessary to document music with photography. I document musicians practising, to make tangible moments and spaces which would otherwise be lost. Private spaces and environments where music is made but not usually seen, can be glipsed at through these photographs.

Initialy I was photographing musicians practising on their own, but I also became interested in the social importance of groups of musicians. It was at the Royal Opera House that I started to realised how much preparation goes into a performance, other than purely with music; the oufits must be made and the stage perpared.

I feel very privileged to have shared these often private moments with musicians - they are memories I will always cherish. The variety of emotions expressed by music in this project has been stunning. I have met outstanding talents, and have experienced some brilliant conversations, kindness and hospitality.

All the photographs were taken on a Hasselblad 500c, on Kodak tri-x 400 / Ilford HP5 400 film, and Ilford Delta 3200 for low lighting situations.

<description>For Nokia World 2011, a number of designers were commissioned to create work as part of Nokia's World Art Pieces, of which I was one of. The brief was open to any media, under the theme 'Everyday Adventure'.

My concept evolved (though technical difficulties, health and safety and budget) to what you see below. I erected a tipi outside the event at the ExCel centre, London. Inside was a fancy dress photobooth, where I invited people to dress up, be silly, and pose!

This was one of the most challenging briefs I have ever worked on - but amounted to a hugely successful project.

<description>Sophie Ramsay is a talented scottish musician and poet. I was privileged to work with Sophies' beautiful words to create an illustrated and hand bound copy of her work. There will be a limited edition run of these books, each one individual.

The most unusual thing physically about this book is the unique door in the hardcover. On the front is a sycamore, and inside the door, the two halves have grown into one strong tree. Douglas from bookbinding CSM gave me some advice on how to go about it, but mentioned that no one had ever thought to do this in his many years of teaching.

After much deliberation, I have decided to re-do the book with my photographs, as I feel photographs communicate more sensitively with the material.

<description>I have been working with Kate McPartland to produce urban Interventions on the Print Protest at CSM. The protest is against the move of graphic design print facilities to a campus three miles away, making the facilities inaccessible to students based at Kings X. We produced a blog on our efforts - the story was picked up by eye magazine - and 4 out of the 6 images in the article, was work produced by Kate and myself. Our work and images were also used by creative review in their article.

<description>I worked with Patricia Lefebure, to create Crème Magazine - a magazine by and for art students in London. This is the finished prototype, with the style, layout and typography completed.

The magazine is a creative tool for young people to get their work noticed, as well as finding out about the latest oppotunities, competitions and events. Many thanks to the talented students who contributed their work.

<description>I worked with Christian Schmeer to produce these posters for a Peroni competition. We used high-gloss ribbon to create the type.
